Cambodia: dengue fever & our debaters

Reuters has informed that Cambodia suffered its worst-ever outbreak of dengue fever last year and it killed 407 people. As far as I have had contacts with our debaters (Martin & Kristina) who were participating in Worlds Universities Debating Championship, they are well and healthy 🙂

Dengue, which causes fever, headaches and agonising muscle and joint pains, had infected nearly 40 000 people since the first outbreaks last May. If compared to the next worst year of dengue fever – there were 16 000 people infected from whom 424 died in 1998.

The World Bank, the World Health Organisation and the Red Cross have provided pesticides to kill mosquitoes, while the Asian Development Bank gave $300 000 to the anti-dengue programme. Cambodia, whose healthcare system was devastated in 30 years of civil war, spends about $3 per person on health a year, according to the World Bank.

After reading articles like this one I cannot imagine why people would ever like to go to such places.. I hope Kristina & Martin will be able to explain it to me 🙂
