EUDC 2009: 1st Entry

August 1, 2009 · 4 Comments

And so we are here. As promised to Ervinas and some other people, I will [occasionally] be trying to reflect on what Arvydas and I have done in Newcastle. For those of you who don’t know, I and Arvydas will be spending the following week in Newcastle where the European University Debating Championships takes place.  We just have settled in our rooms in place called Castle Leazes. Do not be fooled by the pretentious name, since it is simply a student campus built of grey bricks in the middle of nowhere. First observation about Newcastle – grey, lifeless, industrial buildings. I feel like in Mordor. Rooms are a little bit better, but having separate water taps is still bloody stupid.

But enough about this. You will be informed about our [lack of] debating success. The real action happened in our trip to here. In short, it would look approximately like this: Riga – Stockholm – Glasgow – Newcastle. In reality, it was even tougher:

(1)    After taking a flight to Stockholm, we had 12 hours to spare before our next piece of Ryanair experience (selling Playboy wallets, playing classical music hits in bad quality while boarding, you know, the lot). When I say Stockholm, I actually mean 100km away from Stockholm, so we decided to spend this time in the airport. I am sure that Arvydas would portray a slightly different version of what happened, but I spent my time (a) falling asleep in the sun and burning one side of my face, (b) feeling excited about being in Sweden and seeing cutie-pie blondes everywhere and (c) irritating Arvydas with my discussions. Arvydas had a more productive way of spending time, engaging in heavy reading about foreign policy and related affairs.

(2)    We landed in Prestwick Airport in 23.15. After taking a cab to Glasgow train station, we found ourselves in a peculiar situation – the next train to Newcastle was at 6.50 in the morning. Getting a hostel seemed like a waste of time/money/dignity, so we decided to spend the time in some other ways. We started with a quick night tour around Glasgow. Actually the buildings are really nice there. After a while, it became clear that avoiding Scottish youth and sharing a small umbrella in heavy rain was not the way to go. The solution – hitting Burger King at 1AM. Awesome experience! While eating our soya burgers, we had the wondrous opportunity of observing a very special selection of the lowest social levels of the Glasgow scene. Drunk guys in rugby shirts talking in an incomprehensible Scottish accent, white trash in high heels and disastrous dresses – it all was part of the mix. We spent close to three hours hanging out and exchanging glances with the guards when yet another particularly impressive specimen from the Glasgow social scene had entered the restaurant (why do they call it a restaurant anyway? It is a fast food place). At 4AM we, on the border of an emotional breakdown, left the special place and went back to the train station to get some sleep before the journey. That is, we would have done it if it would not be so cold.

(3)    When finally getting ready to hit the train (obviously, feeling ridiculously tired), we discovered an unpleasant detail. Contrary to our expectations, a one-way train ticket from Glagow to Newcastle was 55£ for a single person. I am still not entirely sure who is to blame for this mix-up, but if you meet Arvydas, tell him that I blame him. Since we had no choice, we paid the price & got on the train. Two hours of sleeping, and we finally were in Newcastle.

Sorry for the details and mess – I am yet to recover from our trip. Expect next entries to be way shorter, as we will be concentrating on debating. Post your special requests in the comments section!

World Online Debating Championships

July 16, 2009 · Leave a Comment

I found out about it already some time ago but somehow didn’t realize that it’d make sense to publish it here. Namely, some guys are organising a tournament online in written form. They allow unlimited number of team members and other weird stuff. But check it out yourself – WODC webpage. You may want to participate or just follow how your friends are doing – the organisers are “excited by the quality and diversity of those who’ve signed up so far”, or post your opinion about this new form of debating below.

Money and debates

May 5, 2009 · 3 Comments

Yet another time I proved myself that money rules the world. I read an email concerning a movie about Qatar debate team. When I looked at the trailer I noticed that so many of best debaters around the world have helped them to practice and learn.

I wonder how good could Latvians become if we had such coaches? ;)

Latvian government – a joke or a failure?

April 22, 2009 · Leave a Comment

I’m watching “Kas notiek Latvija?” and I see that even after several months into deep crisis and several months after first discussions with international organizations who deliver financial help to Latvia our politicians just care about their butts and don’t want to see that severe changes and improvements are needed!

It’s a shame that these people are the only ones that we can get to lead our country.. On the other hand, it makes me want to become politically active!

One idea about tax cuts

April 13, 2009 · 1 Comment

It’s sunny and cool outside, but I am helplessly trying to write at least something for the macro report. I was thinking about how life sucks when you have work to do and already was near a suicide. Suddenly, I’ve found a nice concept about political economy that changed my mind about a possible suicide and understood that life is OK and today I’ve learnt something nice and new.

Whatever about my life and bloody report, here is the concept about tax cuts that one could use somewhere in debates. It is called “Starving the beast” and more info about it could be found here . The main idea is that instead of cutting the government spending and then cutting the taxes, it is more effective to cut the taxes and then the government spending will adjust automatically, since government income will reduce. But read more about it to get a better understanding.

Cheers, Nikita aka Hitman

Tournament in Kyiv

March 29, 2009 · 4 Comments

Hello,

I have found a massive BATNA for those who will not partipate in the Peaktime. The option is to go to the “Kyiv Spring” debate tounament (May 1-3) and have some fun there. The level is not very high, meaning that you can binge drink all the weekend and still break.   The reg fees are 20€ & 10€ for debaters and judges respectively, n-1 applies. Some bullet-pointed advantages:

  • CA is William Jones. The euro and world champion. I wonder how can they get such good ca’s all the time.
  • Kyiv is a wonderful city, really worth visiting and revisiting. Relatively cheap as well.
  • It is a train trip – expect nothing but an awesome journey. Plus Odessa is not that far away should anybody want a detour ;)
  • You get grilled meat with onions for breakfast. And like it.
  • Taxi drivers refuse to take you to the hotel because the road to the hotel is flooded.

Registration ends on April 10. Let’s go?

SSER Debate Society has an official band now

March 19, 2009 · 1 Comment

There were two major decisions we made during our trip to Ventspils:

1. The Debate Society already has its own official flat, official drink (Jager … mmm) and official whatever other stuff… Now the time has come to recognise the official band of the Debate Society – The Prodigy. The decision was made during the way back from Ventspils and all five of us voted “for”, so the decision shouldn’t be doubted or argued anyhow :)   Later we will post some photos of our “Mad Road Rave Parties” and you all will be impressed by the power of this music (people in Marupe already had) :)

2. Considering the fact that the official band of the Debate Society is The Prodigy, we decided that the party on the next SSE Riga IV will be a hardcore rave party :)

Now we suggest you go to youtube, search “Prodigy”, and experience the beautiful harmony of rave.

The new place

March 10, 2009 · Leave a Comment

As one might have noticed we are failing miserably to hold debate sessions in our place on Zala street. There is a reason for that; however, the walls of the appartment are so thin that even a regular debate provokes neigbours to start complaining..

As a result we have found a new place. We took our experience with Zala street into account, so this time we got a place in office building :) It is located on Pulkveza Brieza 6.

As the school signed the agreement today, we hope that in few days we’ll be able to move from Zala to P.Brieza street. It seems that the first session will be held there next Monday.

Last weekend four of our teams (one consisting of Martins V. & Eriks R. actually won the competition) participated in BA School of Business and Finance tournament. Also Roberts B. & Nikita P. aka The Hitman qualified for Grand Finals.

The competition was lot of fun, the motions were interesting, people were friendly and our debaters won Apple Nano players ;)

Academic Earth

February 17, 2009 · Leave a Comment

It’s time for the link of the month. Chech out this invaluable resource – Academic Earth is an online database of lectures from the best universities of the world.

I personally have found Academic Earth a great resource for self-development. It also gives one a good idea of what a good university lecture should look like. The universities represented in this project include MIT, Berkeley, and Yale.

In my opinion, the courses by Benjamin Polak on Game theory and Walter Lewin on the basics of physics great. The teaching quality in these courses in very high.

Have fun with it!
